What Fabric-Safe Upholstery Cleaning Actually Means

Why fabric identification, pH, water temperature, and testing matter more than powerful equipment in upholstery cleaning.

It starts with identification, not equipment

Polyester, cotton, linen, wool, velvet, viscose — each fiber has different tolerances for water temperature, chemistry, and agitation. Fabric-safe cleaning means the method is chosen for the fiber, not applied identically to everything.

Why pH matters

Cleaning chemistry runs from acidic to alkaline. Strong alkaline products clean aggressively but can damage natural fibers and leave residue that keeps reacting after the job. Delicate fabrics call for neutral or mildly acidic chemistry, and anything stronger should be rinsed and neutralized properly.

Temperature is a tool, not a default

Hot water helps on sturdy synthetics. But wool, viscose, and silk-like fibers need cool or cold water — heat can distort them or set stains permanently. Blood, for instance, should only ever see cold water.
